Saturday, May 3-4, 10am-4pm NATURAL HISTORY WORKSHOP (Registration required)) Naturalists Ute Olsson, Doris Ivory and Giselle Bergeron conduct a 2-day introduction to the natural history of South Central Alaska. The program is free to candidates (please register)currently enrolled in the Interpretive Naturalist Certification Program of Alaska (INCPA). Non-INCPA participants pay $25 per day, or $40 for both days. Limited to 15 participants ages 16 and up. Registration required by all by calling 694-2108.
Saturday, May 3, 2pm BEARS OF ALASKA : All ages program Volunteer Beth Baker will present this indoor program on black and brown bears, their biology and behavior, and how to stay safe in bear country. Free program, $5 parking for non-members.
Wednesday, May 7, 11am-noon KNEEHIGH NATURALIST (Registration required) Pre-school Program "Frogs" For preschoolers ages 3-5, limited to 10 registered children accompanied by an adult. Program is held outdoors, so please dress for the weather. Cost is $8 per child, plus parking for non-members. Call 694-2108 to register. Optional: Bring lunch and join fellow Kneehighs immediately after the program.

Saturday, May 10, 10am race start EAGLE RIVER NATURE CENTER SEYMOUR CHALLENGE 10K RACE Meet at 9am at the Eagle River Nature Center. 10 K dirt trail race on the Echo Bend Loop. Race time 10am, Entry fee: $30. For information contact Eric Fjelstad at 263-6973 or Asta Spurgis at 694-2108. Online registration begins in April (www.ernc.org) or call 694-2108 to register by phone. Sponsored by Friends of Eagle River Nature Center, Lifetime Adventures, the Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau and Skinny Raven Sports. Proceeds benefit the Nature Center.
Saturday, May 10, 2pm SPRING HAS SPRUNG Junior Naturalist Program (Grades K-6) Let's take a walk and check in every nook and cranny for signs of plants and animals gearing up for the warm season. Outdoor program, free. $5 parking for non-members.
Sunday, May 11, 2pm MOTHER'S DAY TEA ($5 fee, registration required) Families are invited to bring Mom to the Nature Center for a beautiful stroll to the Beaver Pond, followed by an old-fashioned sit-down tea at the education yurt. We'll provide the food, drink and a potted plant to decorate for Mom. $5/person (Mom is free!) or $15 maximum per family. Call 694-2108 to register.
Saturday, May 17, 10am-Noon WEAVERS AND SPINNERS Our local club members spin and weave. Feel free to come and watch and ask questions.
Saturday, May 17, 2pm EDIBLE AND POISONOUS PLANTS Junior Naturalist Program (Grades K-6) You mean I can eat this tree? Come and learn which plants are edible and have been used for food and medicines, and which plants are poisonous. Free program, $5 parking for non-members.
Sunday, May 18, 2pm SPRING GREENS Andy Anderson Smith, president of the Alaska Native Plant Society (www.aknps.org), leads this spring plant walk down the Rodak and Albert Loop Trails. This is the first in a series of walks, looking at native plants through the growing season. Free program, $5 parking for non-members.

Saturday, May 24, 10am-4pm HIKE THE TURNAGAIN ARM TRAIL (Registration required) Join volunteers Bob and Ann Fisher for a 9.4-mile traverse hike from Windy Corner to the Potter Trailhead. Hikers will meet at the parking lot just past the Chugach State Park Headquarters to organize transportation. The parking lot is located at mile 115.2 on the right side of the Seward Highway. There is a $5 parking fee (AK State Park day passes honored). The hike involves numerous elevation gains and losses, including one climb of 850 feet in a one mile stretch. The trail may be muddy in places, but offers spectacular views of Turnagain Arm. Hikers should be in good shape and have completed a hike of similar nature. Hikers are advised to bring a daypack with lunch/snacks, water and wind/rain clothing. Call the Nature Center for trail conditions. The hike is limited to the first 12 people (at least 18 years old) who register by calling 694-2108. Well behaved dogs are welcome on the hike. Please provide a contact phone number and email address at the time of registration.
Saturday, May 24, 2pm WELCOME BACK BIRDS Junior Naturalist Program (Grades K-6) Come and check out which species of birds have returned to the Eagle River Valley after spending the winter elsewhere. As bird detectives we will look for the birds, their nests, and their food. We'll have a leave-no-trace/leave-it-in place scavenger hunt, too! Outdoor program involving 1 mile walk. Free program, $5 parking for non-members.
Sunday, May 25 FREE PARKING TODAY Parking is free on the last Sunday of every month. Now there are no excuses left for staying indoors! Enjoy the many trails at the Eagle River Nature Center.
Sunday, May 25, 2pm BIRDSONG 101 Volunteer naturalist Beth Baker will present a program looking at why and how birds sing and call. An indoor slideshow including tapes of some commonly heard spring songs will be followed by a walk on Rodak trail to hopefully spot and hear a few feathered singers. Free program and parking today.
Monday, May 26 MEMORIAL DAY Center is CLOSED today. Enjoy a hike on the trails.
Saturday, May 31, 2pm EXPLORE THE STREAMS AND PONDS Junior Naturalist Program (Grades K-6) Find out what lives in the streams and ponds near the Nature Center trails. Outdoor program involving 1- mile hike. Optional: bring rubber boots for creek-side exploration. Free program, $5 parking for non-members.
Sunday, June 1, 2pm DISCOVERING MORELS Join morel sleuths, Blanche and Jim Tinius to search for this mushroom's habitat. Learn to identify an edible, tasty morel from a false morel. A 30-minute indoor program is followed by a 2-mile walk down the Rodak and Albert Loop Trails. Free program, $5 parking for non-members.
